Our Midwives

Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are experienced registered nurses who have completed a postgraduate obstetrical and gynecologic program. They are nationally recognized health care specialists who assist normal, healthy women in having babies, as well as handling gynecological health needs. The CNMs at Shenandoah Women’s Healthcare are all certified by a national board exam through the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).

In addition, we are licensed and regulated by the state of Virginia. As nurse-midwives, we work in association with Len Aamodt, MD and Evan Forsnes, MD.  They are Board-Certified OB/GYN physicians. They are caring and sensitive physicians who provide us with excellent medical back-up. At Shenandoah Women’s Healthcare pregnancy and birth are viewed as normal, healthy events in the life of a family. Wellness and positive attitudes are promoted throughout a woman’s life from adolescence through menopause.

As nurse-midwives we watch, test and examine carefully for abnormalities and treat them early to prevent small problems from becoming big ones. We believe that pregnancy and birth are natural and uniquely personal events in a woman’s life. While respecting technology and what it offers, we do not use it routinely. Additional testing may be ordered as the need arises. Our midwifery service provides care throughout a woman’s life cycle including annual GYN and breast exams, PAP smears, birth control methods, pregnancy testing, and preconception counseling. The nurse-midwives offer counseling in fertility awareness and PMS, as well as evaluation and treatment of minor GYN problems. Our professional skills include minor procedures such as colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, IUD insertion and assisting at Cesarean births.

The nurse-midwives are available 24 hours a day to assist you with your medical needs or emergencies, as they may arise. Please call our office number after hours if you need assistance and ask for the midwife on call.
